Joss Whedon, Mitt Romney, and Zombies

This article talks about the video posted to Youtube on Sunday on Joss Whedon. For those of you who don’t know who Joss Whedon is, myself included 20 minutes ago, he is the Hollywood director best known for “The Avengers.” Other celebrities have posted similar political videos. Lena Dunham, the creator of the HBO series “Girls,” released her own political video earlier. As well as discussing the video, this article talks about other celebrities and the candidates they support. Obama has been endorsed by George Clooney and Sarah Jessica Parker, whereas Romney has been endorsed by Clint Eastwood and Donald Trump.

I watched the video to better understand the article (here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TiXUF9xbTo&feature=player_embedded). It was supposed to be an anti-Romney satire. Whedon spent the video attempting to connect the election of Romney with a zombie apocalypse. However, Whedon missed the most important element of satire: comedy. It wasn’t funny. He just sounded bitter. He had a couple references to zombie movies that were mildly entertaining, but that’s about it. He brings up a couple elements of Romney’s platform and states that these will guarantee poverty and rioting. He then says that these are the ideal conditions for a zombie apocalypse. He spends the rest of the video discussing the details of this coming zombie apocalypse. It’s less of a satire and more of a random rant.

Most importantly, this video leads to two questions: do voters care about the political opinions of celebrities, and if not, why do so many celebrities feel the need to announce them? Personally, I never viewed people famous for their accomplishments in the field of entertainment to be reliable sources in the field of politics. Or any field other than entertainment. This is why I’m so confused when I see the political views of actors I don’t know in the news. Do any of you plan on voting a certain way because of a celebrity? Did any of you watch the video and think it was funny?
