Steve originally sold this movie to me as Three Kings but without the serious scenes. I was a big fan of Three Kings, so I was pretty excited for this. Maybe a little too excited. The film takes place during World War II, and Kelly (Clint Eastwood) finds out about $16 million worth of Nazi gold bars. Together with his team, including Crapgame (Don Rickles), Big Joe (Telly Savalas), and Oddball (Donald Sutherland), Kelly makes his way beyond enemy lines in order to steal the gold. And, of course, things don’t go as smoothly as planned.
I’m a fan of heist films, including heist comedies, as this is touted to be. But for whatever reason, I just could not find myself getting invested or interested in this film. For this being a comedy, I didn’t laugh or even smile once. The heist aspect of it was minimal. And I’m not sure I would say this is even a pure comedy. There are definitely serious scenes here. In fact, one of the best scenes in the film–where they have to cross a mine field and then German soldiers show up–is incredibly serious. But even that scene only barely hooked my attention. The aftermath was supposed to be sad, but I just wanted the movie to get on with it already.
The acting was fine. Clint Eastwood was his normal Eastwood self. Though I’d say I’m not a huge Eastwood fan. I like him as an actor well enough. I’ve seen a handful of his westerns, Dirty Harry, and some of his directorial efforts… but for whatever reason, I usually end up respecting his films far more than I actually like them. Donald Sutherland is fun here, though it confused me why he’s a character from the 70s in a movie that takes place in the 40s. It’s overall a good cast, and they do well, but that’s really all I can say about them.
I just don’t have much to say about this film. It’s not bad. I can see why people would like or enjoy it. I suppose it’s just not for me. I guess I expected far more of a comedy than this was. And more of a heist movie than this was. And not 2.5 hours of people talking about what they were gonna be doing. I think the humor needed to be funnier and the tension needed to be more tense. It just didn’t have enough in the places it needed to, at least for me. Though best joke in the movie? Archie Bunker wanting to give everybody medals simply because they’re actually doing something and causing some kind of action. I just wanted more going on, I guess, in all respects.
