FOR THE COURIER
Just as one athlete can buoy an entire track and field team’s showing in a meet, a squad can be strong without a superstar performance.
The latter method was exactly how St. Wendelin went about finishing second in the girls team standings in Saturday’s Fostoria Athletic Boosters Track and Field Invitational at Memorial Stadium.
The Mohawks won just one event, but they scored in all but three on the day — including four second-place showings — and tallied 93½ points to trail only champion Woodmore’s 131.
“We’ve got a well-rounded team,” St. Wendelin coach Fred Hay said. “I don’t think we overwhelmed anything. … It’s all those points from a well-rounded team. I’m proud of the girls.”
Holland Springfield won the boys meet 147-95 over Maumee, with Arcadia recording 70 points for third place and Fostoria High School scoring 62¾ for fourth.
St. Wendelin’s girls opened the running events on the right foot, with Victoria Volpe, Maddie Borer, Jocelyn Reinhart and Sophia Volpe winning the 3,200 relay in 10:27.48.
Among the Mohawks’ seconds, notable was senior Sara Goddard clearing 8-6 in the pole vault. Goddard qualified for the state championships in the event last year, but Saturday’s meet was her first of this season after she tore her left ACL while playing in the school’s powderpuff football game in October.
Her left leg isn’t at full strength, but she has developed the ability to launch off her right leg. She restarted practicing just two weeks ago.
“I’m happy I cleared,” she said. “That’s all I wanted to do today — just clear something and get back into it.”
Hay was happy to see Goddard back in action.
“She keeps practicing and she keeps coming on strong,” he said. “I don’t put anything past her going to state again if she puts her mind to it. She’s a real strong athlete and she’s got really good character. She’s just got an attitude and a mental state that you’d like to have all your athletes have.”
Lakota’s girls received a victory from Katie Park in the discus (105-8).
Holland Springfield’s Victoria Abunaw was named girls most valuable track athlete after winning the 100 hurdles and the 400, while Woodmore’s Liz Koenig was recognized as the top girl in field events after winning the long jump and placing second in the high jump.
On the boys side, the meet’s honor as most valuable track athlete went to Arcadia junior Shae Watklns, who won the discus (163-7) and shot put (46-11).
Watkins won the same honor in the St. Wendelin Invitational, and he said he hopes to be on his way to a state berth. Watkins was the state’s top Division III discus thrower entering regionals last year, but he missed out on making the regional finals.
“I was out throwing the day after regionals last year,” he said. I was already looking for state this year. … I have a little bit of a chip on my shoulder.”
Arcadia had another two-time winner, as junior Clint Recker claimed the 110 hurdles in 15.88 and the 300 hurdles in 42.19.
Other boys winners on the day included St. Wendelin’s Nick DeHaven in the 3,200 (10:31.35), Old Fort’s Adam Alexander in the pole vault (14-6) and New Riegel’s Tim Ink in the long jump (19-9¾).
Woodward’s Tylor Miller was named boys most valuable track athlete after he won the 100 and 200 and contributed to a victory in the 800 relay.
